I have found that because the new mac mini's suck compared to the 2012 ones the price on the refurbished and used are going up to above $1k on eBay and Amazon. It seems the cheapest route but it also seems to involve buying a bunch of stuff based on a mac mini without any warranty left since most have either expired or never were purchased. Then use the OWC dual storage kit, get a Crucial BX100 500GB to run the main OS, use the HDD for local backups, and get a crucial dual channel 1600MHz 16GB kit of RAM. Get a 2.3GHz quad-core with the base 4GB of RAM and a 500GB/1TB HDD.

I wanted to work on an iOS app to consume this restful web api.
